Samantha Goldberg to Assist with Caribbean Promotion

By Paul Pannone

Samantha Goldberg is making her way up the charts by becoming involved with high-profile projects that can mutually benefit from her followers, fans and fun style. Last month Goldberg announced a television project designed to challenge wedding industry crooks and scams. Goldberg called out Marni Gold for reasons she felt were sinister, telling eWedNewz it was only the start of what’s to come.

Tobago in the West Indies is the spot where Samantha Goldberg and Jacqueline Johnson reportedly collaborated to replace boring speakers with a more dynamic approach to promoting the Caribbean.

This month from her Linked In profile Goldberg announced a collaboration with the CTO foundation to help promote Caribbean tourism and destination weddings. Goldberg was welcomed in late 2012 by Jacqueline Johnson of Marry Caribbean, who oversees publicity for the Caribbean countries, to travel to Tobago, replacing speakers who reportedly gave disappointing results the year before at the Third annual Symposium.

According to the release:

The highly sought after celebrity event designer and television personality, Samantha Goldberg, is to put some of her expertise towards assisting Caribbean nationals pursuing further studies in tourism related subjects in the Caribbean. To include “Destination Weddings, Special Events and More… Samantha has agreed to serve on the board of directors of the CTO Foundation, The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), with headquarters in Barbados and offices in New York and London, is the Caribbean’s tourism development agency comprising membership of over 30 countries and territories including Dutch, English, French and Spanish, as well as a myriad of private sector allied members. The CTO’s vision is to position the Caribbean as the most desirable, year round, warm weather destination by 2017, and its purpose is Leading Sustainable Tourism – One Sea, One Voice, One Caribbean.

Among the benefits to its members the organization provides specialized support and technical assistance in sustainable tourism development, marketing, communications, advocacy, human resource development, research and information technology.

In addition the CTO, in partnership with the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association, jointly and equally owns the Caribbean Tourism Development Company, a marketing and business development entity dedicated to promoting the Caribbean brand worldwide.

eWedNewz continues to follow Goldberg’s movement and expected assault on questionable wedding industry activities.

The Week of April 8th in Review

By Paul Pannone

After a two-year investigation eWedNewz broke the story on the wedding charity, Wish Upon a Wedding, investigating allegations and assertions against the charity’s founders and how the organization is managed. This newZ source has stepped up our investigation looking into people who gave their time and abandoned the organization after a relatively short period.

Disillusioned ex-participants and volunteers are hesitantly coming forward telling eWedNewz their stories but are stopping short of going public. Some major wedding industry figures are giving their version of what happened in the Wedding Water Cooler but, oddly, have not come forward. This newZ source has determined that some are under a confidentiality agreement prohibiting them to speak freely.

An ongoing eWedNewz poll so-far shows 57% of respondents say Wish Upon a Wedding is a good concept managed poorly. 20% feel it’s a bad idea run by thieves, resulting in a 77% disapproval rate. 6% say Wish Upon a Wedding  is a very well-run, worthy cause. 14% of replies so-far say they’ve never heard of the organization but will be following the story.

After Years of Silence Sources Speak out Against Wedding Charity

By Paul Pannone

An innocuous story tipped off by several wedding industry sources watching the charity Wish Upon a Wedding that talked about the organization’s website being down for a month woke up a flurry of new allegations and raises questions of how the charity operates. eWedNewz digs deeper into years of questions raised that were reportedly squashed by  a conglomerate of wedding professionals who support the organization.

Cancer survivor, Lisa Barr from Brooklyn, is the first to publicly stand behind her statements and allow eWedNewz to quote her about experiences with the charity organization Wish upon a Wedding.

Corroborating stories say any questioning, insubordinate statements made against the organization, its founding members or suggestions to help resulted in dismissal, forced resignation or members of the organization turning their backs on those asking the questions. Many of the stories were dismissed over the years sounding too much like schoolyard antics rather than a professionally run organization to provide worthy causes for those less fortunate. But years later a story about the organization’s  down website has once again opened the door for critics.

According to Lisa Barr;

“This is why I, along with the original founding members of NYC were ‘removed’ and then it took about 18 months to get a new ‘leadership’. We found that you simply don’t ask questions.  You sat back watched while an organization that asked it’s board members to pay $100 for that ‘honor and demand they find locations in NYC to give space, food etc for free. But they wouldn’t give the team ANY START-UP FUNDING FOR ANYTHING…that’s not how it’s (supposed to) work.  They were getting money in long before their fundraising certificate was established and long before they would produce certification to us.

The thing is, you hope and pray that they are doing well. You want to believe that they are helping lots of couples….but in all the years they have been ‘open for business’, it’s only been about 50 or so couples they’ve given wishes to So if you look at all the various chapters, their board, plus paying for it…yes, where IS all the money going?  Perhaps the various commissions will look into it what they are doing and if they are truly helping couples or themselves,” she told eWedNewz.

Because the concept is of merit and a worthy cause Barr said she did not want to do anything to undermined an organization that she believed in; that’s why she joined. But through her  experience with them she told eWedNewz she became disillusioned and “it changed”.

Barr added:

“This was my experience with Wish Upon a Wedding. I really do hope that they are doing what they say they are, but you have to wonder, have there really been only 50 terminal couples and what are they doing to help the chapters?  Perhaps they have a new President and she IS helping local chapters with funding – I don’t know. I’m no longer a part of the group.

I do know that as someone who had Cancer – I had 7 surgeries to put my body back together – I offered to contact Memorial Sloan Kettering (My hospital) and see if there is something they can do. I AM A CANCER SURVIVOR and am passionate about helping people because I LIVED IT! I know what it’s like to have cancer, and live with it. I offered to use my contacts and that was shut down.

As I said, I don’t know what they are doing now, I do know that the point is to provide a wedding/dream wedding for a terminal couple.  They have done that – but as everyone is questioning…where is the money going?  It can’t be all administrative costs especially when everyone is ‘volunteering/donating’…so who is getting paid?”

The organization has been very successful in raising awareness and money in the wedding industry and is supported my many wedding professionals who are willing to give their time and support to the organization.

According to Elisa Delgardio of A Flair for Affairs

“I believe in the work that WUW does, and trust in the integrity of the organization and BOD. Since WUW certainly has operating expenses, I don’t feel the $100 contribution is that big of an issue – many charitable organizations request the same (or more).”

Over the years eWedNewz has had limited discussion with the organization as we probed further including an exchange with their legal counsel who “warned” us and became very defensive when we reached out to some of their founding members, including Sasha Souza. Diligently we told their lawyers to back off (I’m being very kind) from scurrilous threats. But now emerging statements could force the organization to face some of the tough questions we posed several years ago.

What do you think?

The Week of April 1st in Review

By Paul Pannone

Wedding industry crooks took cover this week, put on notice as the battle for the Gold heated up. Onlookers watched as Samantha Goldberg pummeled Marni Gold, assuring her it’s nothing personal and that other Wedding Scam Artists can expect more of the same. Since announcing her new show Samantha Goldberg told eWedNewz of plans to expose the antics and false claims made by wedding industry professionals who have allegedly taken money and not given the expected results and value to victims.

Another meeting in New York to discuss the  progress of fighting online pirates raised concerns among media members who felt the war is far from won.

New data release by IBISWorld says wedding spending will increase in the next five years in selected categories; all except the men’s formal wear rental business. As the business shrinks a greater percentage of rental units are taken by the Men’s Wearhouse tuxedo division– while the rest of the tuxedo business wastes time and resources fighting one another.

77% of Poll Strongly Suggest Good People Need to be Sharp Business Owners

By Paul Pannone

An ongoing eWedNewz story riled up some small business owners last week who couldn’t grasp the changes taking place or who think they’re able to hide the truth. On a much lesser scale of importance, some grumbled because they cannot tell this reporter what or how to tell the story. But grumble they do, as an ongoing poll shows the profound changes and how meaningless the self-important have become.

A rising poll so-far shows 77% of responses feel small businesses owners need to step up and become better, sharper business people not good people in a business. The data supports experience with most emotionally driven owners who think they’re entitled to consumer loyalty; failing to understand they, along with corporate owned businesses, need to placate to the real boss– consumers.

Online discussions with some pretty tough sources agree the changes are not only needed– they’re overdue. For the first time business owners who’ve moved away from flooded markets and hope for success are giving their unbiased view and specific information of how they’re succeeding.

Melinda Massie changed her profession but not her recipe for success.

Melinda Massie, an ex-event planner in Texas, moved to a new career over two and a half years ago. Massie looked at her event planning business logically, with an unbiased view and decided it was time to move on. But first Massie gleaned experience that will follow her along life’s path and greater success. Today she shared her view about where small business owners are and where they need to go.

“Can a small store compete with a big box on discounting alone? Not if you want to make a profit. However, what we small companies can do is play to our own strengths and make those our selling point over price. Who is our target market? What do they want? Play to that and offer the personalized, individual customer experience. What small shops can do that large ones can’t is act quick. If something isn’t working we can make immediate change without going through a bunch of corporate bullshit. We can create personal connection and inspire loyalty in our customers while the larger companies will have more of a challenge with that. You can bitch about the differences or you can let them inspire you to focus on what makes you and your business stand out and shine.

Does that take more time, thoughtfulness and energy? Hell yeah it does. Customers also feel that and respond well to it. If they don’t, they’re not your target market. And if you’re not willing to do it, then you may as well throw in the towel and go to work for someone else,” according to Massie.

eWedNewz is watching similar moves from other planners who’ve learned the hard way there may be no profitable future in a saturated wedding market.  We’re also watching how hucksters selling false information to new wedding businesses are failing to Double Their Business.

An Angel among Wedding Planner Thieves

By Paul Pannone

The top story this week paralleled the wedding business to the sinking ship, Titanic, including staunch believers that everything old will become new again, just like the rich passengers that didn’t bother to heed the warning of impending danger the night the unsinkable ship sank.

Negative response to the coverage on Social Networks was overshadowed by members of the wedding business who say they’re fed up with a catty business where opinionated, self-proclaimed experts purport their views as authoritative information and aspire to “teach” the others why they’re not as successful as they are.   But truth be told, a closer look at many of the worst offenders shows their own house in disarray with a list of failures along the way.

This week members of the Wedding Water Cooler discussed  the usual array of topics but focused on the rising unrest in the wedding business due to more competition and growing economic concerns. According to the discussions part of the trouble is pinpointed to the common approach of inflicting opinion as fact. In discussions wedding planners– some not all– are seen as overbearing, over-confident and downright nasty, giving all planners a negative persona from the start. But, like we said, some– not all.

Wendy Hartigan owner of Wendy’s Affairs of Heart is a Wedding Planner based in Philadelphia who is committed to ensuring that the needs of every bride are met. With years in the bridal industry, Wendy truly understands the ins and outs of how to create a beautiful wedding. As the Wedding Planner Extraordinaire, Wendy turns the dreams of every bride into a reality.

Among the Angels is Wendy Hartigan a planner from the Philadelphia region. Wendy’s Affairs of the Heart was founded by Hartigan. Ms. Hartigan’s background is in restaurant management and events planning. She also has experience in sales, design and construction of wedding gowns and has done some backstage theater work — costume design and construction and dressing.

According to Hartigan,” The day is about the bride, not about the wedding planner. I get satisfaction from seeing a perfect day and a happy bride.”

According to sources who know Wendy, she may be “Too nice”, lacking the aloofness that is reported a standard among event planners. When eWedNewz confronted Hartigan with the statement she blew off the  idea as nonsense and replied;

“I intend to keep working my tail off for the bride and making sure I do everything I can to make sure she gets the day she’s always dreamed of.”

Hartigan’s tenacious approach is admired and respected by peers and other members of the Wedding Water Cooler group who understand the adversities she faces on her unorthodox path– of actually caring. eWedNewz caught up with Hartigan this week, blogging about the return of the tuxedo. After years of decline updated styles and fabrics caught Hartigan’s attention so she decided to write about some of the changes; but not in the usual planner way.

Lauren Ralph Lauren tuxedos

When wedding planners use tuxedos all are familiar with the Ralph Lauren brand.

“When I want factual information and the latest products I go to the experts in their field, not try to concoct an opinion and pawn it off as fact,” says Hartigan.

In her post The Best Dressed Groom she covers all the latest information about current tuxedo styles and gets applause from major fashion sources in the wedding business, including Bridal Gide VP Jim Duhe. Duhe, an avid supporter of tuxedo rentals, who has spent most of his career trying to help the failing tux rental business, had this to say about Hartigan’s post in the Cooler discussions:

“Oh My God! I must be in the Twilight Zone — or maybe I’m dreaming — or maybe I’ve crossed over. Wendy, you did an amazing job.  Please accept this in the spirit in which it’s offered.  I can’t recall the last time I complimented ANYONE about a feature on tuxedos.”

Duhe’s obvious snub to this reporter who comes from the tuxedo rental business arrives after years of “encouragement” to speak up about tuxedo rentals and what a lousy job everyone– manufacturers, retailers and fashion editors– have done to promote their use to consumers. But after asking for current information about the latest fit and styles, Wendy Hartigan was able to pull a fantastic post together that tells the truth and cannot be dismissed by competitors who say people get paid to say nice things about branded formal wear.

Wendy Hartigan tells eWedNewz she will continue to fight for her wedding couple clients in her local market and chastise planners who make it about them– all while applauding others who share her sentiments to put the bride first, last and everywhere in between.

Old-thinkers Holding on Like Passengers on the Titanic

By Paul Pannone

The sweeping changes brought about by technology is a topic of discussion in Social Media areas but are really discussed by  those willing to embrace the changes. In contrast the changes and falsified– and denied– by those who’ve managed to make a living purporting to know more than the average business owner.

eWedNewz continues our investigation into Marketing Gurus and those who classify themselves as experts in areas they have no business being in. Along the way our coverage into why the old wedding industry accepted standards are slipping into darkness has gained support from respected institutions of learning, bridal publications and other sources who can no longer deny the world of weddings has changed forever.

eWedNewz continues our investigation of wedding marketing gurus and self-proclaimed experts who purport having the lifeboat answers in an extraordinarily fast-paced world of technology.

Our investigation deals with some of the older members of the wedding community who are huddling together trying to downplay eWedNewz reporting, hoping their names won’t appear and blow their cover. A recent story involving an  ABC 20/20 segment exposing some of the practices in the wedding business drew concerns of many hard-working members who’ve had to defend and separate themselves from some of the unscrupulous. 66% of an ongoing poll  says there are good and bad in the industry; no more or less than in other places. But further investigation suggests some of the well-known names (of the past) are taking advantage of the situation, leveraging free publicity from the 20/20 segment to promote old selling tactics and ideas from which the misinformation and perception comes from in the first place. Our investigation on that part of the story continues and will be released later this year.

Commenting on the changes due to advances in technology, Melanie Hetfield, said the following:

“Both Websites and Social Media have plummeted the sale of magazines.  Times change very quickly, what will happen in the next 10 years remains to be seen. 100 years ago the horse and cart was still the main transportation, but has passed very quickly.

Magazines need to be taking advantage of the Social Media and promoting those who advertise in their magazines. They should also have limited material shown on their websites and small charges for members to read the full magazine online. Apps also should be growing for magazines, but are not. When you think now that computers that can be attached to you as a watch are being created, it really is a time for traditional companies to rethink where they stand.

What do you think? Has the wedding business fallen behind, looking to old ideas from marketers who can no longer give the most current information?

The Week of January 21st in Review

By Paul Pannone

The wedding business continues to reel from allegations claiming the business is laden with unscrupulous practices by vendors who up-sell clients and qualify their pockets by the very car they pull up with. An ongoing poll shows 2/3 of replies says there is good and bad in the wedding industry, just like any other business. 22% feel strong enough to say the wedding business is not crooked, while 12% say it is crooked.

eWedNewz digs deeper in the weeks and months ahead to expose possible causes for the allegations including wedding marketers who teach the art of deception to vendors entering the business. Members of the Wedding Water Cooler continue to give their insight to the story.

The American Bridal and Prom Industry Association, ABPIA, announced a new creative campaign to help retailers fend off the growing problem of online piracy and sale of inferior wedding dresses to American consumers. Steve Lang, president of the group, outlined the campaign and how his fight using all available legal means is starting to have an impact.

More Wedding Business Professionals are hurting than ever; Really?

By Paul Pannone

Yes, really; they are. The statement is in response to a story at Think Like a Bride that begins:

“I read an article recently saying that the wedding industry is in worse shape than anyone is willing to admit. Really? Then I have a slew of people lying to me. Or maybe my followers are just a little smarter than the rest.”

eWedNewz reader and wedding service provider, Mary Bower, gives her view on what is happening in the business. Coincidentally her views match countless others.

In an ongoing eWedNewz story and further discussions on Social Networks and  in every format including the Wedding Water Cooler most wedding professionals  we’ve spoken with reluctantly agree things are not good. For the few who want to dispute the findings, citing how well they’re doing– they are the exception– not the rule.

To some hopefuls who dismiss all other information, facts and opinions; subscribe to their own methods of collecting, slicing and dicing information, everything is fine or bound to get better. For some the presentation and argument they make boarders on insanity.

We’ve often quoted Christine Boulton, owner of Think Like A Bride, agreeing with many aspects of the wedding business. But many is not all. Boulton cannot dispute she works with talented, successful local vendors who can afford her services. But for the average wedding service provider–  we speak to many as an informational newZ source– the story is quite different. Many were forced to change the way they conduct their business, adapting to the shift in expectations by consumers who want what they want when they want it and refuse to pay full price. In the thousands of discussions over the past five years not one vendor says they’re doing well running their business the same way they did in the past.

Mary Bower relied to the story and had this to say:

Hi Paul,  I read your article and of course, I have to comment :)  I have a niche here in Lansing, MI where I sell wedding invitations, it’s a side business, thank goodness. I give great service, have great lines. But I believe you are seeing a faltering of the wedding industry because of the economy. Young people are being especially budget conscience these days  They are having difficulty landing good paying jobs, leave college with lots of debt (most of them) and they struggle. unlike we did in the 80′s when jobs were plentiful for us in the yuppie crowd.

I am hanging on to my business, moved it back home from a brick and mortar and am hoping for the best this 2013 wedding season.  I could not survive on invitations alone now and am branching out to do other things, such as candy buffets that may reach a bigger consumer pool other than weddings. Each year now, I often wonder what stationery company will call it quits and leave me holding the bag, like Encore did!

I am also working on a new business that is totally not wedding related to fill the gap.  These are crazy times, and the outcome will be fewer wedding professionals getting out of the business.  Some clean up will be good, as many who got into the business after 2008 thought it would sustain them. My God, have you noticed how many people suddenly became “wedding photographers”  or “cupcake bakers?”   It used to be that there was plenty of room for everyone, but now that is shrinking.

As always, I hope for a prosperous 2013, but this year, (I’m) not taking on new lines, sticking with what I have and hoping for the best!

Mary C. Bower

Occasions

Mary is one of the majority of wedding business owners that are telling it like it is on a national scale. Further exchanges with Mary say many wedding-related businesses in her area are closing and getting out, no longer able to keep holding on.

In an ongoing poll 31% of responses so-far say the wedding business is deteriorating. 20% say the wedding business is stuck in neutral.  11% feels the wedding business has not yet hit bottom for a 62% total negative connotation. On the positive side 13% says the wedding business has hit bottom and is climbing nicely. 20% of response so-far say the wedding business is recovering but very slowly.
